Business Attire
Tokyo is known for its innovative fashion styles, but business dress is still conservative. Regular Western business attire is appropriate. This means subtle colors and the standard corporate outfit -- dark suits for men, conservative dresses or suits for women.
In restaurants, women can wear dresses or dressy pants. Avoid short or tight skirts as you may be sitting on the floor. Men usually wear jackets and ties in better dining places. If you want to be sure, call the restaurant first and inquire about their dress code.
Appropriate summer attire in Japan is generally light clothing with short sleeves. For autumn, the recommended clothing includes lightweight outfits, sweaters and jackets. In the winter months, you'll need a coat when you're going outside, although the temperature seldom drops below freezing. Appropriate clothing includes topcoats, wool suits, thick sweaters and sport jackets.
It's good to wear shoes that easily slip on and off, as shoes are removed before entering all private homes, many restaurants serving Japanese food, and even some offices and meeting halls. And since there might be occasions when you will have to remove your shoes, make sure that your socks are in good condition in order to avoid embarrassment.
