Taxi drivers do not speak English as a rule so get the friendly folks at the information counter on the ground floor to write down the name of your hotel in Chinese. The average cost of a ride to most big hotels in the puxi or central business district (CBD) should cost around $8 or about 60 -70 RMB. Hotels in the new Pudong financial district, where all the foreign banks are required to have their main offices, cost about $12 or about 100 RMB.
The airport is about 15 kilometers from the main business district and a 30-to-60 minutes commute, depending on traffic. The mode of transport can be quite limited, though. Travelers can reach their hotels by riding airport shuttles, available from 6 a.m. to midnight. When you clear customs, simply approach some hotel representatives in the airport and they will arrange the trip for you. You might want to make reservations for a seat in the shuttle in your airport destination before making the trip the night before.
Another option would be to take a cab. Diamond Taxi is the best taxi company but all are pretty much the same. Public transport buses go downtown to various stops for a price of 8 RMB ($1).
