Shanghai is regarded by the rest of the country as very Westernized and the people here are quite proud of the fact that they represent the modern face of the new China. As such, they feel they have more than a little in common with Westerners. They consider themselves modern, forward thinking, and much more stylish than their country cousins.
The Shanghainese are go-getters and represent the most aggressive part of China. It's no wonder that the two most powerful men in China, Jiang Zemin and Zu Rongji, are both former mayors of Shanghai. Above all, the Shanghainese are friendly and enjoy a good laugh. They are exceedingly direct so don't feel insulted if they tell you that you look tired or that you have a big belly. more
