Airport Information

The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is about 9 kilometers from the Makati business and financial center. The Manila Domestic Airport is 1 km. from the NAIA.

NAIA has adequate facilities including duty-free shops; banks, tourist information, hotel and travel agency counters, car rental services, post office, medical clinic, restaurants, baggage deposit area, and souvenir shops.

NAIA, built in 1982 and designed to accommodate 4.5 million passengers a year, is now taking in an average of 8 million passengers. To ease congestion at the airport, a new terminal, called NAIA-II was constructed, and started operating in August last year.

Located east of the "old" NAIA, and standing on what used to be the Manila International Airport, the spacious 3-storey NAIA-II is made largely of glass and steel. Its domestic operations wing can accommodate 6.5 million passengers a year, its international wing, 2.5 million.

The P5.3-billion facility was reportedly designed to relieve travel stress. The various areas of the new terminal are separated by gardens and assorted greenery. Passengers cross through the greenery on elevated walkways leading to several docking areas.

NAIA-II was designed by the French firm Aeroports de Paris, which also designed the famous airports of Paris, Jakarta, Kansai and Shanghai. It is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities: six baggage carousels; 80 check-in counters; 12 air bridges; six air-cooled chillers; 19 X-ray units for baggage; and 17 walk-through detectors.

Philippine Airlines has exclusive use of the new airport’s domestic and international terminals under a deal forged with the Manila International Airport Authority.

In January, groundbreaking ceremonies were held on a third terminal -- NAIA-III -- on a 65-hectare site on Villamor Air Base adjoining the airport runway. The ultra-modern passenger terminal will be built over a period of three years at a cost of P20 billion (about US$495 million). The project is being undertaken by a consortium led by German firm Flughafen Frankfurt/Main AG.

The terminal was designed by American architectural firm Skidmore Owings Merill. According to the consortium, the structure will have a roof shaped like the wings of a bird in flight, suggesting a country on the verge of taking off.
