Bank Directory
Only licensed banks may operate current or savings account, and accept deposits of any size and maturity. Most international banks have branches in Hong Kong, or representative arrangements with local banks. In business districts like Central and Tsim Sha Tsui, Wanchai, and Causeway Bay, it seems that every second block has at least one bank or ATM. Most are part of one of the two big ATM groups: Hong Kong Bank and its associates use ETC, which also accepts Cirrus cards; Chartered Bank and Bank of China and their associates are linked to Jetco.
Visa and MasterCard holders can withdraw cash from Hong Kong ATMS, American Express members can withdraw cash from the Jetco system ATMs. Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation have ATMs which accept Cirrus, Jetco, Visa, and MasterCard, as well as international ATM cards affiliated with Plus and Global Access.
Some small bank branches offer limited services, but all major branches and head offices provide full banking services, including maintaining foreign currency accounts, savings, and checking (called current) accounts; and arranging for letters of credit, overdrafts, and loans. The resources of their sizeable research departments are geared to the requirements of businesspeople. They can also assist in checking the credit rating of potential business partners.
Normal banking hours are approximately 8:30am to 4:30pm, although some minor banks stay open later. Most banks are open until noon or 12:30pm on Saturday mornings. All are closed on Sundays and public holidays.
