Residence of the Popes of the Middle Ages, Avignon has retained a unique historical atmosphere. As the home of a prestigious contemporary theatre festival and Europe's "City of Culture" in 2000, Avignon also has an eye for the avant-garde. Avignon is the capital of the Vaucluse département. It is situated on the left bank of the Rhône, a few miles above its confluence with the Durance.
